Hallyu star Ji Chang Wook recently opened up about his difficult past and profound feelings towards his mother on the popular K-reality show, Yoo Quiz on the Block Season 4.
The actor discussed the various hardships he faced during his childhood, the struggles he encountered when his works underperformed, and the deep affection he holds for his mother.
Ji Chang Wook, known for his roles in popular K-dramas such as Empress Ki, Healer, The K2, and Suspicious Partner, shared insights into his journey through the ups and downs of his career. Despite rising to stardom, some of his subsequent works did not perform as well as expected. “Everyone works hard for the success of their projects, but there are far more failures than successes,” Ji commented. He further revealed the anxiety he felt during his younger years, worrying that a lack of success might cause him to disappear from the industry.
Reflecting on these challenges, Ji expressed that not succeeding with a project doesn’t equate to failure. Host Yoo Jae Suk echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that experiencing failure is an unavoidable part of life and crucial for growth.
During the show, Ji also shared personal details about his living situation, revealing that he still lives with his mother to keep her company. “She is alone, so I feel like she would be lonely if I were to live separately,” he explained. He highlighted his mother’s discomfort with public attention, stating that she doesn’t enjoy being recognized as “Ji Chang Wook’s mom.”
Ji’s deep admiration for his mother stems from the hardships she endured raising him after his father’s early passing. He recounted their tough times, including memories of walking hand-in-hand down shabby alleys and helping her run small restaurants. “My mother managed the BBQ restaurant and the spicy fish stew restaurant all by herself. When it got too busy, I would help her out,” Ji recalled.
Financial struggles were also a part of Ji’s childhood. He often lacked the money for school tuition and worked part-time jobs to help make ends meet. Despite these challenges, he remained determined to ease his mother’s burdens. “I must not let my mother suffer or worry about money,” Ji said, describing his motivation.
Ji emphasized that his mother remains his driving force. “Seeing my mother go about her daily life gives me healing,” he shared. He finds solace in spending time with her, believing that these moments are more valuable than any material gifts.
The actor also lightened the mood by sharing a humorous incident from 20 years ago when his best friend, now the CEO of his agency, was his manager. Ji recounted how their late-night shoots often led to frequent stops at rest areas for much-needed naps, turning a short journey into a lengthy adventure.
